أكلتُI ate رغيفاًa loaf عندَat عيسىIsa فملَّنيso he grew tired of me
وكانand he had been كهمِّيas I wished منfrom محبٍّa loving friend مُقَرَّبِclose
I ate a loaf at Isa's, so he grew tired of me.
I ate a loaf at Jesus’s place, and it filled me
And he had been all I wished for in a loving, close friend.
Though it was like my worry from a beloved friend
رآنيhe saw me قليلَhaving little الخوفfear منof لحظاتهhis glances
وذلكand that منof شأنيmy manner لهُto him غيرُnot مُعجبُpleasing
He saw that I had little fear of his glances,
He saw me, little afraid of his glances
And that trait of mine did not please him.
And that is my way with him, unimpressed
يُريدُhe wants أَكيلاًa dining companion رُزْؤهُthe loss he causes منfrom طعامهhis food
كرُزءِlike the toll of كتابٍwriting منfrom ترابdust مُتَرِّبِa dust-sprinkler
He wants a dining companion whose toll on his food
He wants a glutton whose appetite is sated by his food
Is like writing's toll on a dust-sprinkler's dust.
Like the crumbs of a book from dusty soil
إذاwhen لَحِظتهُglanced at him عينُهُhis eye عندduring مَضْغِهِhis chewing
طوىhe folded away الأُنسَease طيَّthe folding of الخائفthe fearful one المترقبِthe watchful one
When his eye falls upon him as he chews,
When his eye gazes at me while he chews
He folds away his ease like a fearful, watchful man.
He folds up companionship like a watchful frightened one
يُحبُّhe likes الخميصَthe lean البطنof belly منamong أكلائهhis dining companions
ويُضحيand is in the morning ويُمسيand is in the evening بطنهُhis belly بطنَthe belly of مقرِبone nearing childbirth
He likes the lean-bellied among his dining companions,
He loves a potbelly on those he feeds
While morning and evening his belly is that of one about to give birth.
And spends his days and nights with a familiar potbelly
وماand not أُنسُfriendliness ذيone possessing أُنسٍfriendliness لعيسىto Isa بمؤنسٍcomforting
ولاnor وَقْعُthe sound of أضراسِthe molars of الأكيلthe dining companion بمُطربِdelightful
And no friendly man's friendliness brings Isa comfort,
And Jesus feels no companionship with a companion
Nor does the sound of the dining companion's molars delight him.
Nor the clatter of the glutton’s teeth with one who celebrates merrily
تزَوَّدْtake provisions إذاwhen آكلتَهُyou dine with him فهيfor it is أكلةٌa single meal
وماand not أختُهاits sister إلاexcept كعنقاءِlike the mythical Anqa مُغْربِfar-flying
Eat your fill when you dine with him, for it is a single meal;
If you eat at his place, provision yourself, for it is but one meal
And its sister is as elusive as the far-flying Anqa.
And nothing else, like a lone gazelle in the sunset
