أسومُكَI ask of you ماwhat يسومُasks of العبدُthe servant مثليlike me
مَليكاًa sovereign منfrom بنيthe descendants of الأملاكkings مثلَكْlike you
I ask of you what a servant like me asks
I serve you as a slave like me should serve,
of a sovereign like you, descended from kings.
A king among kings, one like you.
أسومُكَI ask of you أنto تدرَّpour forth abundantly عليَّupon me رزقيmy livelihood
وتنبذَand discard خِدمتيmy service لتُبينَto reveal فضلَكْyour generosity
I ask you to pour forth my livelihood upon me
I ask of you to grant me my livelihood,
and dispense with my service, to display your generosity.
And cast off my service to show your bounty,
وقدand indeed أغربتُI have been unusual جِدَّاًvery much فيin سُؤاليmy request
لتُغربَso you may be exceptional فيin العلاglory وأمنتُand I felt safe from بخلكyour stinginess
I have indeed made a most extraordinary request,
For long have I earnestly begged,
so that you may be exceptional in glory; I feared no stinginess from you.
That you may be generous in giving and I believed in your bounty,
ولمand did not أجهلْbe unaware of هنالكَthere جورthe unfairness of حُكميmy demand
ولكنّيbut I عرفتُrecognized هناكَthere نُبلكyour nobility
Nor was I unaware then of the unfairness of my demand,
I did not ignore the injustice of your rule,
but there I recognized your nobility.
But I knew your nobility there.
فإنso if تفعلْyou do so فأنتَthen you لِذاكَof that أهلٌworthy
وإنand if تمنعyou withhold فلستُthen I do not ألومُblame عدلكyour justice
If you do so, you are worthy of it;
If you do this, you are worthy of it,
and if you withhold it, I do not blame your justice.
And if you withhold, I do not blame your justice.
ولستَand you are not بعادمٍlacking ماas long as دمتَyou remain حياًalive
مديحكَpraise of you سالكاًtraveling فيalong كلevery مسلكpath
And as long as you live, you will never lack
As long as you live, I will praise you,
praise of you, traveling along every path.
Taking every path to glorify you.
حلفتُI swore بمنby Him who يَردُّكَbrings you back ليto me مَردّاًa return
كريماًgracious إنهindeed He بالأمرover the matter أَمْلكhas greater command
I swore by Him who brings you back to me,
I swear by Him who will return you to me kindly,
graciously—He has greater command over the matter—
He is able in command.
لئنeven if أخفَىhas hidden حِذاريmy fear عنكَfrom you شخصيmy person
لمَاcertainly not أرسلتُI released منfrom كفَّيَّmy two hands حبلكyour rope
even if my fear has hidden me from you,
If my person has hidden my caution from you
I have certainly not released your rope from my hands.
When I let go your rope from my hands,
ولمand did not أهربْflee علىwith ثقةٍconfidence وعلمٍand knowledge
بأنيthat I إنif رميتَyou shot أفوتُwould escape نَبلكyour arrows
Nor did I flee with confidence and knowledge
It was not from confidence and knowledge
that, if you shot, I would escape your arrows.
That if you threw I would evade your arrows.
ولكنّيbut I هربتُfled علىwith يقينٍcertainty
بأنكthat you مُغمدٌkeep sheathed فيin الحلمforbearance نصلكyour blade
But I fled with the certainty
But I fled in certainty
that, in your forbearance, you keep your blade sheathed.
That your sword was sheathed in clemency.
وماand there is no بيin me رغبةٌturning away عنfrom عبدِa servant of عبدٍa servant
لديكَat your side وإنand even if جعلتَyou make أذايharming me شُغلكyour occupation
Nor do I disdain to be a servant’s servant
I have no desire to flee a slave of your slave
at your side, even if you make harming me your occupation.
Though you make my misery your occupation.
ولكنيbut I أصونُsafeguard عليكfor your sake قدْرِيmy dignity
ورُبَّand many a مصونةٍcherished thing ليof mine فيكَconcerning you بلrather لكyours
But I safeguard my dignity for your sake,
But I protect my worth to you
and many a cherished thing of mine concerns you—rather, is yours.
And much protected in you - nay, for you.
وماand why ليshould I أستخفُّbelittle بقدْرِthe worth of نفسيmyself
وقدand indeed أوطأتُهاI made it tread يومينfor two days رحْلكyour abode
And why should I belittle my own worth,
I do not underestimate my soul's worth
when I had lodged myself at your abode for two days,
Which carried your saddle two days.
وقدand indeed نبهتَهاyou made it distinguished ورفعتَand raised منهاits standing
وشكّلَand shaped قدرَهاits worth التشريفُhonor شكلكin your likeness
and you had made me distinguished and raised my standing,
You awakened it and raised it up
and honor had shaped my worth in your likeness?
And your honor shaped its worth and form.
وحَسْبِيand sufficient for me رفعةًelevation وعلوَّand loftiness of قدْرٍrank
بأنيthat I مرةًonce قبَّلْتُkissed رِجْلَكْyour foot
And it is enough to exalt me and raise my standing
It suffices me in high station and esteem
that I once kissed your foot.
That once I kissed your foot.
فلاso do not تسخطbe angry عليَّwith me ولاand do not تُذِلنيhumiliate me
وشبِّهand make resemble بالمحاسنto the virtues منكَof yours فِعلكyour conduct
So do not be angry with me, nor humiliate me,
So be not angry with me nor debase me,
and make your conduct match your fine qualities.
And make your actions like your virtues.
وصُنْand protect حُرَّاًa free man بذلتَyou gave generously لهُto him العطاياgifts
فقدfor indeed شانَmarred ابتذالُكyour debasing منهof him بَذْلكyour giving
And protect a free man to whom you gave gifts,
Guard a free man you granted gifts
for your debasement of him has marred your generosity.
For your lavishing them on him debased him.
