I adjure you by God concerning my worth and standing
I implore you in my worth and status
with you: let neither be open to mockery
That you wrong neither in idle sport

from a friend who mixed kindness with an offense.
One who mixed good with evil
And cunning did not seize him—no—nor madness;
Though guile availed him naught, nor vileness brought him aught

but a jest, ugly-faced and scowling—
Yet ugly jesting, foul of face, befits him more
the grave befits it better than showing its face.
Than fresh disgrace spread wide and far

O you to whose fellowship one is bound to hasten,
O you who must hasten to reunite us
and for whose affection one must turn aside and linger:
Though crookedness and confusion be your wont

if, before today, I was gold in your eyes,
If I was gold to you before this day
then that pure substance has not been tainted by dross.
Then that pure gold knew no corrosion

One deft and skilled of hand twisted my cord tight;
My rope has been cut by skilled hands
so that cord's firm twist cannot unravel.
So that rope will not snap again

I am he whose character swore long ago
I whose nature from of old
that no foolishness or obscenity would be spread in his name.
All creation swore would never don a slipper or a cloak

And my inviolability under your protection—God has exalted it;
And my sanctity, by God so lofty in your eyes
nor is my hide a thing that moths can gnaw.
Age cannot gnaw, nor insects stain

Indeed, the words hung as earrings upon you are brass,
This talk you have corrupted is like
which the ear disdains when made to wear it.
A shame the ear recoils from when artless

I had, in what its claimant reported
I have no stake in what its claimant alleges to you
to you, no schemer's spell or incantatory breath.
Neither charm nor whispered spell
وماand not سكتُّI kept silent اعترافاًin acknowledgment بالحديثof the report لهُto him

Nor was my silence an admission to him of the report;
Nor kept I silent in admission of his words
but I held back, panting from its heat.
But I contained myself, though scalded by their heat

And I deemed bluntly contradicting a trusted man
And shamed my brow, disbelieving utterly
harsh, even if his words gave cause for concern,
Violently, though he spoke twisted words

especially since jesting might have been his purpose,
The jest was likely his sole aim
nothing else—and earnestness has a field for its seed.
Not earnest, though earnestly he sowed

And I have always been easy in temper and forbearing,
Yet openhanded am I, generosity my way
though I have become a man with a bushy beard.
Though in my beard be strands of grey

My forefathers are Romans: Tufil and Tufalis;
My fathers were Byzantines, Theophilos and Theophobos
and neither Rib‘i nor Shabath begot me.
No Arab ever spawned me, no!

Nor did I set out to boast over anyone,
Nor did I vaunt some vain pretension over anyone
but speech flows when it is stirred.
But words will flow when the theme is brought up

My jealous attachment to you compelled my defense—not thirst
I am too proud to plead excuses to you, no thirst
on my part for praising my ancestry, nor hunger.
Have I to praise my line or race

So safeguard my place with you, and raise it
But preserve my place with you, and name me such
above what brings reproach upon corpse-like souls.
That souls shudder not nor rot

Let no misfortune ever befall what has been mine,
Let no new thing occur contrary to what we had
for your neighbor is guaranteed protection against misfortune.
For your neighbor is one you vouchsafed security

And be gentle with my opponent; restore him despite his disarray.
Be gentle with my adversary, though disheveled his appearance
May you always, while you live, be one through whom disarray is mended.
You'll remain, long as you live, the one who smooths his hair
