وفاقدُ العين تابع الأثرِ
His desires end in memories;
His thoughts wandered to the past,
And one who loses the thing itself follows its trace.
As the blind man followed the tracks.

إلّا افتقاد العهود بالذِّكَرِ
Desires whose enjoyment escaped him,
Except longing for old pacts,
Save revisiting past times through memories.
Nothing remained of the goods of his past.

When my hand sought to attain them,
When opportunities came to my hands,
They eluded it, save the reach of thought.
They were disabled except exchanging ideas.

سقياً لأيامٍ لم أقل أسفاً
سقياًa blessing of rain ولمand I did not أبكِweep عهدa time مُدّكرِremembered
سقياً ولم أبكِ عهد مُدّكرِ
May rain bless the days when I never said in sorrow,
I lived days without saying alas,
'May rain bless them!' nor wept for a time recalled.
Nor crying for a memorable past.

May rain and care bless that fresh, unspoiled life,
I lived and shepherded an esteemed life,
Whose days I am now bereft of.
Yet I became in need of it from its past.

Its days gratified me with its bliss,
Despite the shortness of that span.
Over what was in it of shortness.

If gray hair folds away its pleasures, I have
If its pleasures lengthen with old age,
Gathered from it the choicest fruit.
Then I have reaped its fruits when ripe.

The onset of gray hair dismayed me, although
Old age's occurrence saddened me,
I was stouthearted, my cords of resolve firmly twisted.
Although I was stoic, gathering bitterness.

The gray-haired man may well heap dust upon it—
It is right for the grey-haired
No—gray hair itself is dust enough for him.
To be excused, or his greyness sufficed as an excuse.

Gray hair is not mere grayness; if you ask about it,
Grey hair is not just greyness, so if you ask about it,
Grayness is life mingled with sorrow.
Grey hair is the turbidity of life.

Why doesn't your grey hair console you for your youth?
Gray hair and its death-knell for the life that remains?
With no grey hair, the rest of life remains.

تُشعِل ما جاورتْ من الشعر
The very beginning of grayness is a single hair;
The first beginnings of greyness is one,
It sets alight whatever hair lies beside it.
That ignites what hair it neighbored.

While it is seen alone, suddenly it blazes up,
While you see it alone when ignited,
Showing you the fire of grayness in other hairs.
It showed you the fire of greyness in others.

Like a mighty blaze that is begun,
Like a great fire, you start it
At its first onslaught, by a tiny spark.
With the first small sparks.

If its companions appear,
As though it were one of the sores of mange.
It's like live coal amongst embers.

Thus small matters, if they lasted,
To give rise to the beginnings of great ones.
Become principles of greatness.

If only the youth's vigor lasted for him,
As long as he lived—or ended when desire did.
As long as he lived or until death comes.

O locks I knew for a time,
An oath I upheld for a time,
Black, jet-black, with luxuriant tresses—
Dark, dusky, deceitful.

One day, even after a long wait?
