عن ذي اليمينين شدَّ ما اختلفا
He has two left hands, which he acquired by inheritance
He has two left hands that inherited their qualities,
From Dhū al-Yamīnayn, the Two-Right-Handed One—how greatly the two differed!
Unlike the one with two right hands, how different they are!
ماhow أبينevident اليمنgood fortune فيin نقيبتهhis character
ما أبين اليمن في نقيبته
علىfor أعاديهhis enemies حيثwhere ماever انصرفاhe turned
على أعاديه حيث ما انصرفا
How evident the good fortune in his character—
How distinct is the goodness of Yemen in its leader
For his enemies, wherever he turns!
Against his enemies wherever they turn.
بجودthrough generosity ماsome انقادتsubmitted البلادthe lands لهto him
بجود ما انقادت البلاد له
حتىuntil إذاwhen ماemphatic particle استثارهاhe roused them ضعفاhe grew weak
حتى إذا ما استثارها ضعفا
Through some generosity, the lands submitted to him,
With his generosity the lands submitted to him
Until, when he roused them, he grew weak.
Until when he aroused them in their weakness
كأنهas though he were الدهرTime منbecause of هزائمهhis defeats
كأنه الدهر من هزائمه
يلعنهmay He curse him اللهGod أينماwherever ثقفاhe is found
يلعنه الله أينما ثقفا
He is like Time, because of his defeats—
It was as if time in its defeats
May God curse him wherever he is found!
Cursed him, may God curse him wherever found.
