أُقدِّمُI place first فيat أوائلهاtheir beginnings النسيباlove poetry
Have you not seen that, before my satires,
Do you not see that before attacks
I place love poetry at their beginnings,
I present at first gentle words
لتخرقso they may pierce فيinto المسامعthe ears ثمّthen يتلوfollows
هجائيmy satire مُحْرِقاًburning يكويsears القلوباthe hearts
So they may pierce the ears; then follows
So they pierce in the ears, then followed
My burning satire, searing hearts,
By my burning satire that scorches hearts
كصاعقةٍlike a thunderbolt أتتْcame فيin إثرthe wake of غيثٍrain
وضِحْكِand laughter البيضِthe fair-skinned women تُتْبِعُهُyou follow it with نحيباsobbing
Like a thunderbolt that came in the wake of rain,
Like lightning that came after rain
And like fair-skinned women's laughter that you follow with sobbing.
And laughter of the white days followed by weeping
عجبتI marveled لمنat whoever تَمَرَّسَtangled بيwith me اغتراراًin false confidence
أتاحbrought about لنفسهِfor himself سهماًan arrow مصيباstriking true
I marveled at whoever tangled with me in false confidence:
I wonder at one who recklessly took shelter in me
He brought upon himself an arrow that strikes true.
Offering himself as an easy target
سَأرْهِقُI shall burden منwhoever تَعَرَّضَset himself ليagainst me صعُوداًan arduous ascent
وأكويand I shall sear مِنْwith مياسميَmy branding irons الجنوباthe flanks
I shall burden whoever challenges me with an arduous ascent,
I will exhaust whoever opposes me
And sear their flanks with my branding irons.
And scorch from my southern climes
