ماnot كرَّمhonored اللّهGod بنيthe children of آدمٍAdam
إذsince كانwas أمْسىbecame منهمُfrom among them خالدُKhalid
God did not honor the children of Adam,
God did not honor the children of Adam
since Khalid had become one of them.
When the lowliest of them became eternal.
واللّهand by God لوif أنَّهمthat they خُلِّدواthey were made immortal
By God, if they were made immortal,
By God, even if they were made eternal
until everlasting eternity itself perished,
Until the endless eternity passed away,
وسُخِّرَand was made subservient البرُّthe land لهمْfor them مركَباًas a conveyance
والبحرُand the sea أنَّىwherever قصدheaded القاصِدُthe traveler
and the land were made a conveyance for them,
And good deeds were made their vehicle
and the sea, wherever the traveler set his course,
And the sea wherever the traveler went,
ودوَّخُواand they subdued الجنَّthe jinn فدانتْso they submitted لهمْto them
وأذعنand yielded العِفْريتُthe powerful jinn والماردُand the rebellious jinn
and they subdued the jinn, who then submitted to them,
And they subdued the jinn who then obeyed them
and the ifrit and the marid yielded,
And the defiant and rebellious submitted,
وأصبحand became الدهرُTime حفيّاًsolicitous بهمtoward them
كأنهas though he were منthrough برِّهhis kindness والدُa father
and Time became solicitous toward them,
And time became their retainer
as though, in his kindness, he were a father,
As though it was his child and birth,
واستوتand became equal الأقدارfortunes فيin خُطَّةٍa condition
فليسso there is no محسودٌone envied ولاand no حاسدُan envier
and fortunes stood on an equal footing,
And destinies became equal in distribution
so no one was envied and no one was envious,
So none envied or were envious,
ولمand not يكنexist داءٌa disease ولاand no عاهةٌan infirmity
فالعيشso life صافٍclear شرْبُهُits draught بارِدُcool
and there were neither disease nor infirmity,
And there was no illness or disability
so life was clear, its draught cool,
And life was pure its drinking cool,
ودامتand remained الدنياthe world لهمfor them غضّةًfresh
كأنهاas though it were جاريةa maiden ناهدُwith budding breasts
and the world remained fresh for them,
And the world remained ever verdant for them
like a maiden with budding breasts,
As though it was a compliant maiden,
ماnot كُلِّفواthey were required الشكرgiving thanks وقدand indeed ضمهمunited them
وخالدُand Khalid اللْؤمِof baseness أبٌa father واحدُone
they would owe no thanks, for they were united
They were not burdened with gratitude though it embraced them,
with vile Khalid by a single father.
And the wretched ingrate was but one.
