Fulfill your promise: the best of your promises

is one followed by your fulfillment.

Do not leave the man you promised, when you meet

him, a mote turned about by the corners of your eyes.

It is a mule you promised me; if you break

your word, your character will resemble its.

Fear God, lest a broken promise disgrace you:

for lofty virtues and their people are your lovers.

Do not change colors like a mule over this mule,

nor let your flavor change on me.

Then the poem will circulate about you with reproach,

scorching reproach that your own deserts have brought you.

    Prolonged delay encourages the harassment

of you by one who takes no pleasure in harassing you.

So choose between two courses, and do not let

your obstinacy close off the paths before you:

your leading the mule, or fleeing on it across the

earth—but where could you escape me?

And if the rhymes should seek you out one day,

catching you will by no means be beyond them.

There is no escape from me, even if you flee:

I am a thing: fleeing it drives you back to it.

Your long ladders will not save

you from my onslaught, nor will your tunnels.

Indeed, better than your use of the mule,

all things considered, is your enjoyment of

a free man's gratitude: if it carries you a stretch

    toward eminence, your coursers will lead the field;

or you will catch the frontrunners, and become

one whom few outstrip on the way to greatness.

Gratitude and praise will carry you to the goal

    that your thoroughbreds cannot reach.

And the daughters of asses are likelier to make you swear

to give them up, when your leg goads them.

Would that I knew—you are rain that brings relief,

your outpouring unceasing for those who hope,

peerless in deeds; your praisers go overboard

before your own extravagance is seen—

whether people will think, after linking me so firmly

with you till I was even told, 'Your Ishaq,'

that my standing with you is to be denied a mule.

That is something your lineage refuses to allow me.

Whoever's broken word I may fear, your promise has always

been to me like your binding covenant.

So rend delay with fulfillment, just as

your radiance rends the pitch-black darkness.

You are not one whom miserliness has bound,

so I need not pray for your bonds to be undone.

We have addressed you in verse, claiming our due with a jest

not of a kind to tighten the noose about your neck.

So bear with us: how much generosity and forbearance,

and patience, cast shade over your pavilion!
