From me comes satire, from you patience—so endure
From me comes reproach and from you patience, so be patient,
the worst that is awaited, O worst of those who wait.
For the evil of one who waits, O most evil of those who wait,

You are base: if you endure, it is from shamelessness
You are base, so if you show patience, it comes from baseness,
in the face of humiliation; and if you lose heart, it is from weakness.
And submission to degradation, and if you complain, from vileness,

I found your disparaging my verse, when it pains you,
I saw the faults in my poetry when it pained you,
akin to your brother the dog's biting at a stone.
Like the biting of your brother the dog against a stone,

Look at the dog being pelted, so we may know that
Look at the dog thrown a slipper and know that
you have left none of his traits unmatched, nor left any out.
It left no trace of him and nothing remained.
