يكون بكاء الطفل ساعة يوضَعُ
For the evils of which the world gives warning,
a child cries the moment he is born.

Otherwise, what in it makes him weep, though it is
more spacious and wider than where he was before?

When he beholds the world, he cries out, as though he
sees and hears the harm he will suffer from it.

It is as though, when I cried at birth among my midwives,
all I would endure at your door appeared to me.

And in some states, souls seem
to see behind the veil of the unseen what they expect.

So do not defend your proud nose if you grovel, for
thus everyone who clothes himself in greed grovels.

You strove, in folly, to awaken fate's decrees,
yet those decrees would not slumber even had you slept.

Even if those seeking sustenance exerted their utmost,
the decrees would come to pass only as they are destined to.
