ولقد يُؤلفُنا اللقاءُ بليلةٍ

ولقد يُؤلفُنا اللقاءُ بليلةٍ

جُعلت لنا حتّى الصباحِ نظاما

جُعلت لنا حتّى الصباحِ نظاما

And indeed, a meeting unites us on a night

made a binding thread for us until dawn.

نجزي العيونَ جزاءهن عن البكا

نجزي العيونَ جزاءهن عن البكا

وعن السهاد ولا نُصيبُ أثاما

وعن السهاد ولا نُصيبُ أثاما

We give the eyes their recompense for weeping,

and for sleeplessness, incurring no sin.

فنبيحهن مَرادَهنَّ يَردْنه

فنبيحهن مَرادَهنَّ يَردْنه

فيما ادَّعين ملاحةً ووساما

فيما ادَّعين ملاحةً ووساما

So we grant them the desire they seek

in what they have declared lovely and fair.

ونكافئ الآذانَ وهي حقيقةٌ

ونكافئ الآذانَ وهي حقيقةٌ

أن لا تزالَ تكايدُ اللوَّاما

أن لا تزالَ تكايدُ اللوَّاما

And we reward the ears, deserving as they are,

for ceaselessly contending with reproachers.

فنثيبهُنَّ من الحديث مثوبةً

فنثيبهُنَّ من الحديث مثوبةً

تشفي الغليلَ وتكشفُ الأسقاما

تشفي الغليلَ وتكشفُ الأسقاما

So we give them a reward of conversation

that quenches yearning and dispels afflictions.

ونكافئ الأفواه عن كتمانها

ونكافئ الأفواه عن كتمانها

إذ لا يزالُ لها الصُّماتُ لجاما

إذ لا يزالُ لها الصُّماتُ لجاما

And we reward the mouths for keeping secrets,

since silence is ever their bridle.

فنبيحنّ ملاثماً ومراشفاً

فنبيحنّ ملاثماً ومراشفاً

ما ضرَّها أن لا تكون مُداما

ما ضرَّها أن لا تكون مُداما

So we surely grant them places to kiss and lips to sip from;

no harm comes to them from not being wine.

نجزي الثلاثةَ أنصباءَ ثلاثةً

نجزي الثلاثةَ أنصباءَ ثلاثةً

مقسومةً آناؤها أقساها

مقسومةً آناؤها أقساها

We reward the three with three shares,

their hours apportioned—the harshest of them [wording unclear].
