    Durayra brings rapture,

    And Nuzha brings distress.

    ـلُ عنك الحزنُ قد عَزَبَا

    This one sings, and so

    Sorrow stays far from you;

And this one howls, and so prolongs

    Your sorrow and suffering.

I say to the man who brought them together:

"You have indeed brought us a marvel!

Do you bring together two opposites—

This one uphill, that one downhill?"

    He replied—ever clever

In his argument, though he lied—

"We invited this one to lessen

    The blaze of our Tammuz.

But when she carried the cold too far,

We feared it would destroy us.

So we brought the one who is

Her opposite, to soften what was hard."

And I suspect that he is a man

Who seeks illicit relations with her.

And had the fellow been chaste,

He would not then have resorted to lies.
