قد وَصَلَتْ قارُورتي

قد وَصَلَتْ قارُورتي

وحاجتي ما وَصَلَتْ

My flask has indeed arrived,

My bottle has indeed arrived,

but my need has not been met.

but what I needed has not arrived.

تسيلُ مستعبرَةً

تسيلُ مستعبرَةً

بأَيِّ ذنبٍ قتِلَتْ

بأَيِّ ذنبٍ قتِلَتْ

She leaks, shedding tears:

It trickles, weeping:

“For what sin was she slain?”

For what sin was it slain?

فأصبحَتْ قد غُيِّرَتْ

فأصبحَتْ قد غُيِّرَتْ

عن حالها وبُدِّلَتْ

عن حالها وبُدِّلَتْ

And so she ended up altered,

So it has now been altered

transformed from her former state—

from its former state, and changed:

مكسورةً منقوصةً

مكسورةً منقوصةً

ليست كأخرى كَمَلتْ

ليست كأخرى كَمَلتْ

broken and diminished,

broken and diminished,

unlike another that was whole.

كَسُورةٍ قد غُيِّرت

كَسُورةٍ قد غُيِّرت

عمّا عليه نزلَتْ

Like a sura that has been altered

Like a surah that has been altered

from the form in which it was revealed.

يا حسنها إن نُصِرَتْ

وقبحَها إنْ خُذِلَتْ

وقبحَها إنْ خُذِلَتْ

How lovely she is, if upheld;

How lovely it is if aided,

and how ugly, if forsaken!
