Time did no wrong in zealously oppressing

You, house of Isa, with a grudge-bearer's injustice.

    ولم يَمْلِ سهمُهُ عنكم إلى سَننِ

    You were the bone in its throat, so it aimed at none but you;

Nor did its arrow veer from you toward another course.

Many a deed of yours ran counter to its ways,

For which it nursed grudges against you all.

Many a man it broke you raised, although

It had felled him—a castoff with feeble bones.

And often you blunted the sharp tips of its claws with

The shields you layered before its two hands.

Alas for the most forbearing of them, the noblest

In character, and the staunchest protector against time's calamities!
