O my youth—and how far my youth is from me!

Its cords have warned me of their severing.

A reign whose young man Time showers with bounty,

which has marked youth's emblem in black.

My soul aches for my bliss and play

    beneath its supple, fresh boughs.

And to one consoling me for lost youth, offering solace

in the graying of age-mates and peers,

I said, when he began counting his consoling examples—

one man bereft of youth, then another:

    Others' wounds do not heal my wounds;

his suffering is his, and mine is mine.
