ليس حمدُ الجفون في مَرْيها النوْ
مَcompletion of ‘sleep’ ولاnor نَفيِهاtheir warding off أَذىthe harm of الأَقذاءِmotes
مَ ولا نَفيِها أَذى الأَقذاءِ
The eyelids merit no praise for coaxing sleep,
nor for warding off the harm of motes.
إنماonly حمدُهاtheir praise إذاwhen هيthey حالتْinterposed themselves
إنما حمدُها إذا هي حالتْ
بينbetween طرفِthe gaze of العيونِthe eyes والبُغَضاءِand loathsome people
بين طرفِ العيونِ والبُغَضاءِ
They merit praise only when they stand
between the eyes’ gaze and the loathsome.
