May your day never cease to be a warning to your morrow,

And may the eye of whoever envies you weep with grief.

For if calamity has struck you, how often has it struck

Through you, an ambition that sought refuge in your support!

Were the days to bow down, they would bow

Only to a day that sapped your arm's strength.

O blessing whose bloom has faded,

How ugly its beauty was in your hand!

For it became coolness upon my liver

When it became heat upon your liver.

And I saw God's bounty increasing

When the decrease in your numbers became plain.

And every thunderbolt has surely wished

That it had been poured down upon your liver.

Of all that wore my body down, nothing remains for me

Except the soul's lingering in your body.
