وكم قائلٍ قد قالَ لي فيك مرةً

أتصحبُ ذا بخلٍ ولستَ بذي بخلِ

And many a man has said to me of you, at one time or another:

“Do you keep a miser’s company, though no miser yourself?”

"Do you keep company with a miser, though you are no miser?"

فقلت أنا المفتاحُ والقُفْلُ صاحبي

فقلت أنا المفتاحُ والقُفْلُ صاحبي

وهل يوجدُ المفتاح إلا مع القفلِ

وهل يوجدُ المفتاح إلا مع القفلِ

So I replied: “I am the key, and the lock is my companion;

I replied, "I am the key, and the lock is my companion;

And is a key ever found except with a lock?”
