I saw my companion, ever startled
By white specks in my beard, which he would brush away.

How will he fare, then, before long, when he sees
The specks of gray, whose falling flakes have blanketed it?

And I have stitched its rents with all manner of contrivance;
But what time has worn out—who can stitch it?

A greeting of peace to the night of youth,
When the dawn of gray hair gleams, streaked black and white.
