أريدُI desire جداكَyour bounty وأستمنحُكْand I ask you for gifts
وأغشَىand I come to ذَراكَyour shelter ولاand not أمدَحُكْI praise you
I seek your bounty and ask you for gifts.
And I come to your shelter, yet do not praise you.
ومثلُكand one like you يمنحُنيbestows on me فضلَهُhis bounty
ولكنَّand yet مثليَone like me لاnot يَمْنحُكْbestows on you
One like you bestows his bounty on me,
But one like me bestows nothing on you.
وماand why ليfor me أراكَI deem you عديلَequal to الثناthe praise (continued)
ءِ(completes 'praise') منيfrom me وتلكَwhile those العُلاlofty merits تُرجحكْtip the scales in your favor
And why should I deem you equal to the praise
I offer, when those lofty merits tip the scales in your favor?
وماand why ليَfor me أُطربكI delight you مُستصلحاًseeking your goodwill
وأخلاقُكwhile your virtues الدهرَforever تستصلحكْkeep you benevolent
And why should I delight you, seeking your goodwill,
When your virtues keep you benevolent forever?
