لم يبقَ لي صبرٌ ولكنما

أبقى بقلبي البَيْنُ أشجانا

No patience remains to me; yet

I have no patience left, yet

parting has left sorrows within my heart.

separation has left sorrows in my heart.

أبدَلْتَني بُعداً بقربِ الذي

أبدَلْتَني بُعداً بقربِ الذي

قد كان من حُزنيَ سُلوانا

قد كان من حُزنيَ سُلوانا

You gave me distance in exchange for the nearness of one

You gave me distance instead of the nearness of the one

who once had been a consolation for my sorrow;

who had been solace for my sorrow,

وكان لي أُنساً لدَى وَحْشتي

وكان لي أُنساً لدَى وَحْشتي

وكان لي رَوْحاً وريحانا

وكان لي رَوْحاً وريحانا

he was companionship to me in my loneliness,

and had been company for me in my loneliness,

and was repose and sweet basil to me.

and had been relief and sweet basil for me.

يا بدرُ ما أسرعَ ما رابني

يا بدرُ ما أسرعَ ما رابني

في وصلِكَ الدهرُ وما خانا

في وصلِكَ الدهرُ وما خانا

O full moon, how swiftly Time filled me with misgiving

O full moon, how swiftly Time troubled me

about union with you, though it had not betrayed me.

in my union with you—and betrayed me!

غِبت فغاب النوم عن ناظري

غِبت فغاب النوم عن ناظري

وسامني طيفُك هِجرانا

وسامني طيفُك هِجرانا

You vanished, and sleep vanished from my eye;

your dream-vision inflicted estrangement upon me.

and your phantom subjected me to estrangement.

كانت بك الدنيا لنا جَنةً

كانت بك الدنيا لنا جَنةً

فنغَّصتْ لذّةَ دُنيانا

فنغَّصتْ لذّةَ دُنيانا

Through you, the world was paradise for us;

Through you, the world was a paradise for us,

then it soured the delight of our life in this world.

then it marred the pleasure of our earthly life.
