ومُكْسِبَand one who enriches others أموالٍwealth رِغابٍabundant وكاسباand an earner
O Abu Jaʿfar, may you ever receive and give,
Enriching others with ample wealth, and earning it yourself.

I asked you for a cloak when you were an official
Over the village of al-Nuʿmān, receiving lavish gifts.
فأوسعتَنيyet you lavished on me منعاًrefusal إخالُكI think you نادماًregretful

Yet you lavished refusal on me; I think you regret
It, and now are eager to atone for it.
فإنso if حَقَّproves true ظنيmy surmise فاستقِلْنيthen seek my pardon بمُتْرَصٍwith a close-woven cloak
يقينيthat protects me إذاwhen ما(emphatic particle) القُرُّthe bitter cold أبدىbares المخالباthe claws
If my surmise is true, seek my pardon with a close-woven cloak
To shield me when the bitter cold bares its claws.
وإنand if كانis ظنيmy surmise كاذباًfalse فهْيthen it is هفوةٌa lapse
وماand not خلتُdid I think ظنيmy expectation فيْئةَreturn to right الحُرِّof the noble man كاذباfalse
And if my surmise is false, it is a lapse;
Yet I never thought my belief in a noble man's repentance false.
وماand not كانwould be مَنْone whose آباؤكyour forefathers الخيرُthe noble ones أصلهُhis root
ولُبُّكَand your mind مَجْناهhis harvest-ground ليمنعَever withhold واجباwhat is due
Nor would one whose roots are your noble forefathers,
And whose harvest-ground is your mind, withhold what is due.
فعجِّلso hasten كسائيmy cloak طيِّباًgladly نحوtoward شاكرٍa grateful man
سيُجنيكhe will let you reap منfrom حُرِّpure الثناءpraise الأطايِباthe choicest things
So send my cloak promptly and gladly to a grateful man,
Who will let you reap the choicest fruits of genuine praise.

And deliver what I seek, undiminished and without delay;
You will be repentant, without your petitioner regretting his hopes.
أجِبْanswer راغباًa seeker لبّىwho heeded رجاءَكhope in you إذwhen دعاit called
إليكto you وعاصَىand defied فيكfor your sake تلكthose التجارباexperiences
Answer a seeker who heeded hope in you when it called
Him to you, and who defied, for your sake, those past experiences.
ولاand do not تَرجِعنَّever send back الشِعرَpoetry أخيبَthe most disappointed خائبٍof the disappointed
فماfor not حَقُّthe due مَنْof one who رجَّاكhoped in you رُجعاهُhis return خائباdisappointed
And never send poetry back the most disappointed of all,
For one who hopes in you does not deserve to return disappointed.
وياand O سَوْأتاmy shame! إنif أنتyou سوَّدتَblacken وجهَهُhis face
فأصبحَso he becomes معتوباًreproached عليهagainst him وعاتباand reproaching
And oh, the shame, if you blacken his face,
So he becomes both reproached and reproaching!
يذُمُّكhe blames you مظلوماًwronged وتلحاهُand you rebuke him ظالماًacting unjustly
هناكthen فيستعديso he seeks help from عليكagainst you الأقارباthe kinsmen
He, wronged, blames you; you, the wrongdoer, rebuke him.
Then he appeals to kinsmen for aid against you.
فإنَّfor indeed احتمالَbearing الحُرِّby a noble man غُرماًa financial loss يُطيقهhe can afford
لأَهونُis surely easier منthan تحويلِturning سِلْمٍa friend مُحارِباinto a foe
For a noble man's bearing a loss he can afford
Is easier than turning a friend into a foe.

فياso, O ابنson of عليٍّʿAli لاdo not تَزِدْنيadd for me عجائباwonders
The wonders of this age are many to me;
So, son of ʿAli, add no more wonders for me.

لأعجبُis surely stranger منthan أنthat يصبحshould become البحرُthe sea ناضباdry
Indeed, an excuse from you in the face of my need
Is stranger than the sea's running dry.

And spare me talk of the cloak, for it is
A trifle; and set your excuses aside.

My share—do not let its place escape your notice,
Lest tomorrow you suffer wearying distress from blame.

We have been sorely deprived of meeting you in person;
So compensate us richly with your bounty while absent.

وماand not حَسَنٌseemly أنto تَسْترِدَّyou reclaim المواهباthe gifts
I have regarded men's promises as gifts,
And it is not seemly for you to take gifts back.

Rajāʾ has pledged hope on your behalf; let it not be
A gentle breeze among the winds that range the desert plains.

God's blessings come to us through your bounty;
So do not turn them, through coldness, into calamities.
وَلاَand do not تَكُbe أُلهوباًa blazing flash منof البرقlightning خُلَّباًdeceptive and rainless

And do not be a blazing flash of rainless lightning,
For you have always been a torrent of pouring rain.
