هذا كتابٌ من أخ شاكرٍ

نُعماك يرجوك لريبِ الزمانْ

نُعماك يرجوك لريبِ الزمانْ

This is a letter from a brother grateful

for your bounty, who looks to you against time’s misfortunes.

أصفاكَ شكرَ القلب عن نيةٍ

أصفاكَ شكرَ القلب عن نيةٍ

وبعدَ شكرِ القلب شكر اللسان

وبعدَ شكرِ القلب شكر اللسان

He has offered you his heart’s thanks with sincere intent,

and after his heart’s thanks, the thanks of his tongue.

ولست أشكوك ولكنما

ولست أشكوك ولكنما

يشكوك مني موضع الطيلسان

يشكوك مني موضع الطيلسان

And I am not complaining of you; rather,

the place on me where a mantle belongs complains of you.

فأنجِز الوعد بثوب له

فأنجِز الوعد بثوب له

من الجياد المرتضاة الحسان

من الجياد المرتضاة الحسان

So fulfill your promise with a garment for it,

one of the fine, choice, handsome ones.

وفي القوافي ثمنٌ مربح

وفي القوافي ثمنٌ مربح

فلا تُقصِّر ذَرْعه من ثمان

فلا تُقصِّر ذَرْعه من ثمان

And in these rhymes lies a profitable payment;

so do not make its length less than eight cubits.

ولا تكدِّره بتأخيره

ولا تكدِّره بتأخيره

حاشاك من مَطل الجواد الجبان

حاشاك من مَطل الجواد الجبان

And do not spoil it by delaying it—

far be it from you to stall like a cowardly giver.
