Say to the vizier—may God perpetuate his good fortune—
Consider Ibn Furat and Ibn Abdun.

بل قد نظرتَ فلا تغبن أشَفَّهما
فليسfor ... is not ذوone possessing الرأيjudgment فيin حظٍّa share بمغبونcheated
فليس ذو الرأي في حظٍّ بمغبون
Rather, you have already considered them; so do not shortchange the better of the two,
for a man of judgment is not cheated of his share.

من صارمٍ ثقةٍ بالغيب مأمونِ
Do you not see in Ibn Furat the clear marks
of a resolute, trustworthy man, reliable when out of sight?

We know him to be strong and trustworthy in hand
and judgment, in all matters known and surmised.

ألاthat ... not يخونhe betrays ولاnor يُغضيhe turns a blind eye علىto هُونhumiliation
ألا يخون ولا يُغضي على هُون
In him are suppleness and sharpness, which ensure
that he neither betrays nor acquiesces in humiliation.

He is like a sword, unsheathed when you wield it—
as smooth on both sides and as keen as you could wish.
