Come, take this from the headstrong one,

Passed down from generation to generation.

O Abu Faswa, you have drawn near to one of us—

A creditor who will not be put off over debts.

Word reached me that you had spoken ill of me,

And you are not trustworthy in friendship.

Perhaps you felt safe from my sudden wrath and rejection,

When you secured your house with pledges?

    وأضعفُ عصمةٍ عِصَمُ الظنونِ

    You were deceived, and false surmises fed you;

And the weakest protection is the safeguard of conjecture.

O Fatim, give notice of your separation from me,

As one companion parts from another.

I see presumption in your father, and my honor

Is too dear to me to lose—so depart.

For I do not think you worth suppressing my anger,

Nor is my honor among costly wares.

Another woman's affection will suffice me in your stead,

And I shall strike, my right hand unrestrained.

Suppose I had compromised my honor for your sake—

Am I, in folly, to compromise my honor and my faith?
