The valiant defenders sell their blood

for the paltriest prices, driven by distress and hardship.

But if they demand their pay or speak of it at length,

they suffer humiliation: long imprisonment and flogging.

While you, son of the vinegar vat, enjoy the shade of bounty

and a life as soft as the hem of a striped cloak.

You layer silk and brocade in luxury—

so, what a sword you are, and what a sheath!

    The sons of Hashim go on foot, while you have a spare mount led beside you;

your horses gallop, dark bays and chestnuts.

You have reached the heights of the stars in glory and wealth,

without merit, solely through your massive cock.

I have found you in greater favor with God

than the chosen prophets, endowed with right guidance.

Those were granted paradise on credit,

while you, son of the vinegar vat, enjoy the paradise of cash in hand.

Praise be to you, our lord; and I do say:

"Praise be to you"—from a soul reluctant to praise.

And how can the soul be generous with praise

in circumstances that invite disbelief and denial?
