I see the poets have found favor with you,

all of them—the tongue-tied and the eloquent—

except me: I find myself a man

grown thin, while all of them have grown fat.

So if I am a discerning man among them,

then do not deny me a discerning man's due.

And if I am one of their disabled,

then do not deny me a disabled man's due.

Enter me in the register of your disabled,

though I have not faltered in praising you.

To God goes my complaint of your unfair dealing,

and I am not the first free man to be cheated.

When I come to you as a poet, you say:

    “Plainly disabled and sorely tried!”

And if I come to you disabled, you say:

“Abu al-Layth Sular Takin has come to you!”

    Your judgment contradicts itself

    and joins what is incompatible.

So I draw neither the stipend of your able-bodied

nor the stipend of your disabled.

    فلا يأمنُ اللَّهَ من قد أمِن

    I shall bring a plea for redress to my Creator;

so let no one who feels secure feel safe from God.

    My argument has encircled you, pearl upon pearl;

and who can make things clear if I have not?
