Fulfill the promises you made before,
O giver of favors without promises.

بِرَّthe kindness of الشقيقa full brother إلىtogether with حُنُوِّthe tenderness of الوالدِa father
Why defer my request, after you have shown me
A brother's kindness joined to a father's tenderness?
ولقيتَنيand you met me فلقيتنيso you met me متهلِّلاًbeaming

And you met me, greeting me with a radiant face,
Like rain heralding a life of plenty.

كَدَرُthe taint of الصّنيعةِa kindness والفَعالِand conduct الماجِدِnoble
Indeed, delay—and you are not one to practice it—
Sullies kindness and noble deeds.
ورأيتُهand I have seen it خُلُقاًa habit لكلِّof every محاولٍone trying
منfrom نفسهhis own self إيقاظَawakening جُودٍgenerosity راقدِsleeping
And I have found it the habit of anyone trying
To awaken a sleeping generosity within himself;
لاno بلrather لكلof every مُزاولone striving منfrom نفسهhis own self
إحْياءَreviving ميْتٍa dead thing منamong طِباعٍnatural traits هامدِlifeless
No, rather, of anyone striving within himself
To revive a dead and lifeless natural trait.

And you are shielded and safe from both,
Through your lineage, the finest of lineages.
حاشاكfar be it from you منfrom خلُقِthe character of المجاهِدone battling لؤْمَهُhis stinginess
واللؤْمُand stinginess شَرُّthe worst مُجاهَدٍfoe to be battled لمجاهِدِfor one who battles
Far be it from you to share the character of one battling his own stinginess;
And stinginess is the worst foe for one who battles it:
يُمْسِيhe passes the evening ويُصبحand passes the morning فيin رياضَةِdisciplining نفسهhis own soul
لتطيبَso it may be willing عنto part with رِفْدٍa gift وليسyet he is not برافدِa giver
He spends evening and morning disciplining his soul,
So it may gladly part with a gift—yet he is no giver.
