وسماحٍand generosity أمor مَنْwho يُقاسُis compared إليهِto him
Who has seen Khalid's equal in surpassing forbearance
and generosity—or who can compare with him?
يَتَغَاضَىhe turns a blind eye عنto زوجتيهِhis two wives اغتفاراًin forgiveness
وهماwhile they both ضُرَّتاهhis two co-wives فيover عَبْديهِhis two slaves
He turns a forgiving blind eye to his two wives,
though both are his co-wives, sharing his two slaves.
ليسَdoes not ينفكُّcease عبدُهhis slave رأيَin the sight of عينan eye
فوقَatop أمِّthe mother of العيالِthe children منamong زوجتيهِhis two wives
His slave is always, before his very eyes,
atop the mother of his children, one of his two wives.
ماnot عجيباًstrange ألاthat…not يَغارَhe feels jealous عليهاover her
بلrather عجيبٌstrange ألاthat…not تغارَshe feels jealous عليهover him
It is no wonder that he feels no jealousy over her;
rather, the wonder is that she feels none over him.
قدindeed سمِعناwe have heard بحاتمof Hatim وبكعبٍand of Ka'b
فهماand they both يعدُوانrun بينَbetween يديهِhis two hands
We have heard of Hatim and of Ka'b,
yet both run in attendance before him,
إذwhen سحاscoured نفسَهhimself بماءٍwith water مَسوسinsipid
ولظىand the blaze of النارthe fire بينbetween جاعِرَتَيْهِhis two buttocks
when he scoured himself with insipid water,
with the blaze of fire between his buttocks.
