Indeed, those who praise the people of our age today

are more deserving of deprivation than those who lampoon them.

Many a man among them has said to me, when I praised him

with praises as lovely as gardens:

“Well done! Alas for you, those virtues are not mine; I only

admire good deeds in my own scales.”

O poet who has taken to weaving his praise

for the worst generation, the worst people of any age:

you deserve no reward from one you have stubbornly contradicted

and assailed with falsehood and slander.

They are people whom you remind of others’ virtues,

so they see the shortcomings within themselves.

Thus, when you praise them, you open for them

a door to regrets and sorrows.

A man does wrong who offers praise to their like,

then seeks the recompense due for kindness.

Does he bring them grief and seek their bounty?

Indeed, he has transgressed and persisted in aggression.

They have indeed shown kindness and borne every hurt,

when they offered their listening ears as targets for him.

Gone are those whom their panegyrists would stir,

as armored warriors shake tall ash-wood spears.

When praised, they recognized the virtues within themselves,

so noble generosity held an honored place among them.

And praise strikes the heart of one who deserves it,

as admonitions strike the heart of a believer.

So leave the ignoble: the reward for praising them is nothing

but the reward for worshipping idols.
