    Abu Ali, people have tongues:

if you speak, they speak with them and will not desist.

    فاشنأْهُ واجعله بعض ما تدعُ

    Aggression is an ally against its own proud wielder;

so loathe it, and count it among what you abandon.

Otherwise, be both archer and target:

you shoot and are shot at, and scandals follow.

A slanderous word can never be recalled,

once listeners have trumpeted it abroad.

what good a man's cutting tongue does him when

one day he is left with his honor in shreds.

There is no gain in that, if you reflect, and if

modesty and piety set you straight.

So turn back, while your brother's mercy remains,

and repent: forbearance still has room to spare.

whose words abound in novel creations.

And I have honey for whoever repents, mixed with

rain-cloud water; otherwise, bitter sap and salaʿ.

You have lampooned a man too exalted for

praise; mine is loyalty, not fear.

    does nothing but lower himself.

bows and bowstrings drive them onward.

And every arrow my hands let fly

strikes nowhere but a vital spot.

By Him to whom foreheads bow,

after this, there is no hope of my leniency.

That is an honor I refuse—no, God refuses—

    to let any stain touch.

And before it stands a reinforced defense

from me; I have the strength to uphold honor.

it has no resting place short of his death.

men's noses that are cut away.

That is an arena, as you have heard,

where men's fine qualities are stripped away.

    There you see nothing but

honor, rather than life, worn as armor.

    Life is restored after death,

but honor, once lost, is never restored.

We stand where we are seen and heard,

a sight and sound without equal.

Let whoever can take warning heed admonition,

while restraint can still do him good.

My forbearance is not such as to bring me

humiliation, however much room it has.

to injustice, though it affords a stronghold.

with the fetters and robes of honor it holds.

and follow good, for it is to be followed.
