I call to you, O you whose hearing knows no deafness—

the call of one whose cause is just, undeterred by rebuke.

Will generosity, beauty, and wisdom then hear

the complaint of a grieving man whose grievance is abandonment?

And bounty, freely bestowed, is withheld until I seem

a castaway from whom neither praise nor recompense is hoped for.

    وقدرُك فارفعْهُ فما مثلُه قدر

    O Qasim, set aside my worth and whatever it deserves;

but exalt your own worth—for no worth can equal it.

And favor me with the most unstinting of your bountiful gifts,

or let despair endow my sacred claim—though no dowry is due it.

Must I depart while my plight gives my rival no pain,

though your command is one no other command can oppose?

My soul had hoped, after this turn of fortune,

to cool with this the embers upon my heart.

How often I sought patience when you shunned me; yet I see

no path to it—unless speaking out must disgrace me.

Still, I put my soul to the test and found

its night an age, its hour a month.

Speak plainly: plain declaration befits the forthright,

and far from you be its opposites—treachery and perfidy.

Preserve the dignity of a soul whose proud zeal

rightly makes it see abundance in hoping in you,

and persuades it to humble itself, though proud—

a soul whose resolve is matched by patience and victory.

Yet it has been allotted a meager share

with you—but can anything you bestow be meager?

Your kindness tasted sweet to it, as though

it bore the savor of your nature, or its fragrance.

All wealth beneath another's patronage is paltry,

even were I Khosrow and Istakhr my home.

Once I held out to my soul the wealth it might gain from you,

and another time wealth from myself—my wealth being patience.

It inclined toward gaining wealth from you, for that

is wealth unalloyed; patience has ever been poverty's wealth.

I swear, if you do not enrich me with the most wholesome wealth,

I shall surely mount patience, now that fortune has balked.

Then take offense at this saying of mine to you:

I quenched myself with my own saliva when the sea left me thirsty.

Oh, the shame upon glory and pride thereafter—

though rightly should glory and pride admire what I did!

How strange—while time is full of its wonders!

Can water intoxicate when wine does not?

How strange—while time is full of its wonders!

Can drizzle make things grow when rain does not?

How strange—while time is full of its wonders!

Can a star shed moonlight when the full moon does not?

How strange—while time is full of its wonders!

Can a fire dazzle when the dawn does not?

Do I call Qasim to my rescue, while my own resolve

enriches me, but the overflowing bounty of his palm does not?

I called: bounty did not surge; but when I called upon my resolve,

a heart surged through it, accompanied by patience.

It ran, and I dragged it on and made it my target, while it stood firm.

I marveled at this affair—indeed, the affair itself marveled.

My patience supports me, while Qasim neglects

to support me; the crippling blow dealt by my age is crippling.

My praise has traveled through the land's east and west,

and residents and travelers alike have sung it.

It was said: “Qasim is the patron in whom I hope, and I am his protégé,”

and the sea vied with me for the profit of my bargain.

By my life, I sought relief without falling short,

so that my condition might be mended while mending was still possible.

    فقلت لقد غَنَّيْتُ إنْ ساعد الزَمر

    How many a speaker has said, “You have gone too far in what you say”;

then I said, “I have sung—if only the choruses lend aid.”

Will the least of your fingertips rain upon my side,

when all ten of your fingers have rained upon whole peoples?

If your violation of my sacred claim was but a trifle,

that trifle has toppled both my praise and my hope.

And if the sincerity of my affection was a sin, then I

persist in it, even if pardon and forgiveness spare me.

Be tender, sons of Wahb, toward us, for

through such conduct from you, people and the age are set right.

The loyalty and generosity shown to your servant have indeed warned

the wary against you—so vigilance does not miss its mark.

    ولكن لكم خِيمٌ يُريع به البَذر

    They did not neglect to sow my seed for that, though it flourished;

rather, yours is a nature in which seed yields richly.

    فلِمْ أنا في نُعماك رِدْفٌ وهُمْ صدر

    After the Conquest, people whom I had preceded pledged allegiance;

why then, amid your favors, am I in the rear while they are at the fore?

    فلِمْ شرْبُهم صفو ولمْ مَشربي كدر

    Nothing has ever equaled the purity of my inward intent;

why then is their drink clear while mine is turbid?

    فلِمْ كسبُهم مَدٌّ ولمْ مكسبي جَزْر

    No tide has ever surged like my praise of you;

why then is their gain a flood tide and mine an ebb?

Why do I keep seeking some support

when I have backs like yours—and no backs are like yours?

Away with this world, whose reversals have grown monstrous,

where one like me fails and some ʿAmr succeeds!

Behold, it is an image truly ugly,

one your radiant face could never approve.

My only grievance is that a discerning man should see it

and follow it with a sidelong glance of judgment.
