O builder of the fortress, who set it firm and raised it,

as a refuge for a body laden with afflictions,

look at Time: has its quarry ever eluded it,

in the eagle’s soaring heights or in the fish’s swimming depths?

And whoever fortifies himself, fainthearted and fearful,

his fortress is but a prison for a prisoner.

I complain to God of ignorance that has harmed us—

rather, not ignorance, but a deluded man’s knowledge.
