I have seen Time raise every scoundrel,

And bring low everyone of noble character,

Like the sea, in which a living being drowns,

While a corpse never ceases to float in it,

Or the scales, which lower everything of full weight,

And raise everything light in weight.

Such is its way with us; yet we

Dwell, despite it all, in lofty fortresses.

Our forebears built them, and we sought refuge

In them, and in the virtuous souls within us.

Whenever its folly grows excessive against us,

We bear it with judicious minds,

And ward off its misery with patience, until

We dispel it with subtle minds,

Until God has mercy—He in whom we hope

In every violent calamity that comes from it.
