تفكَّرت في حيف الزمانِ عليكُمُ

تفكَّرت في حيف الزمانِ عليكُمُ

فلم أره عند التأمُّلِ ظالماً

فلم أره عند التأمُّلِ ظالماً

I pondered time's injustice toward you,

but on reflection I did not find it unjust.

أجرتُمْ عليه من أخاف ومن يُجِرْ

أجرتُمْ عليه من أخاف ومن يُجِرْ

عليه ويُحفِظْهُ يَهِجْ منه عارما

عليه ويُحفِظْهُ يَهِجْ منه عارما

You gave refuge from it to those it frightened; and whoever gives refuge

against it and angers it rouses a fierce adversary in it.

ومن لم يزل يبْتَزُّ ليثاً فريسةً

ومن لم يزل يبْتَزُّ ليثاً فريسةً

يكن قَمِناً أنْ لا يُرى منه سالما

يكن قَمِناً أنْ لا يُرى منه سالما

And whoever keeps snatching prey from a lion

is unlikely to escape it unharmed.
