    The Marthadids are lords, to whose credit are counted

    Wa'il's noble deeds of glory and honor.

    Glory among other peoples has died of old age,

    while theirs looks youthful, or in its prime.

    Nor is Ali ibn Abd Allah—when drinkers seek

    his brimming pools—scant, shallow water that can be drained dry.

    Whenever we describe him, we find his virtues

    so abundant they exceed our account many times over.

    May thirsty men's souls be your ransom, their eyes

    fixed on a fresh draught from you.

    فسقِّناها عليها القار والخزف

    Drink served in glass, however ample, is scant;

    so serve it to us encased in pitch and earthenware.

    فالدهر أجمع إن راعيته نُتَف

    Pluck us some days' delight to live on;

    for all of time, if you observe it, is but fragments.
