O you who promise a horse, yet delay giving it—

what has changed your affection in my absence?

Long delay indeed foretells a broken promise,

yet I do not suspect you of breaking yours.

How could you defer my request, deeming it permissible

to do so, when you have taken my praise in advance?

You have judged most unjustly, my brother,

when you met my ready cash with deferred payment.

In less time than you have stalled, there could be born

a horse like yours, the one you are to give.

So spare me further delay by fulfilling your promise—

promptly, thus freeing yourself from my resentment.
