منwho عذيريmy vindicator مِنَagainst الخلائفِthe caliphs ضلّواthey strayed
من عذيري مِنَ الخلائفِ ضلّوا
فيconcerning سليمانَSulayman عنfrom سواءِthe straight course of السبيلِthe path
في سليمانَ عن سواءِ السبيلِ
Who will take my side against the caliphs, who have strayed
in Sulayman's case from the straight path?
وضعواthey placed الرّفدَlargesse والكرامَةَand honor منهin his case
وضعوا الرّفدَ والكرامَةَ منه
فيin مقامthe place of العقابِpunishment والتَّنكيلِand exemplary chastisement
في مقام العقابِ والتَّنكيلِ
They gave him largesse and honor
in place of punishment and exemplary chastisement.
نفلوهُthey awarded him علىfor الهزائمِthe defeats بغداBaghda– (partial Baghdad)
نفلوهُ على الهزائمِ بغدا
دَ–d (completes Baghdad) كأنْas though قدalready أتىhe had come بفتحٍwith a victory جليلِglorious
دَ كأنْ قد أتى بفتحٍ جليلِ
For his defeats they awarded him Baghdad,
as though he had won a glorious victory.
ماnot أراهُمْI see them بذلكby that الفعلِdeed إلاexcept
ما أراهُمْ بذلك الفعلِ إلا
زهَّدواthey discouraged الناسَthe people فيfrom البلاءِservice الجميلِnoble
زهَّدوا الناسَ في البلاءِ الجميلِ
By that deed, I see, they have done nothing but
turn people away from noble service.
منْwho يخوضُplunges into الردىdeath إذاwhen كانit was منone who فَرْfled (first part)
منْ يخوضُ الردى إذا كان من فَرْ
رَcompletion of 'fled' أثابوهُthey rewarded him بالثوابِwith the reward الجزيلِlavish
رَ أثابوهُ بالثوابِ الجزيلِ
Who would plunge into death, when one who fled
was rewarded by them with lavish recompense?
