Abu al-Fadl, do not shut yourself away; I am

forgiving of the promise-breaker, ready to pardon.

And when my companion is not generous

with his bounty, I meet him with dignified restraint.

You are safe, you are safe; so pay no heed

to my repeated visits or my departure.

May I lose your brotherhood—precious as it is—

if I do not keep my desire sheathed,

and if I do not fast thereafter all my days

from kashk, while any churl remains among men.

I asked you—not out of need—and you shut yourself

away from me and demanded that I desist.

As though I had asked you for all mankind's sustenance

in the year of the lean cows.

I have loathed men with the fiercest loathing,

and spurned their bounty with the utmost aversion.

I praised you as a trusting man,

    a devoted client and a true-hearted friend.

So you repaid me with an aversion surpassing

all aversion and every turning away.

    And then you wrapped yourself

most tightly around all you possessed.

As though I had bound you—when I loosed

my tongue in your praise—with the tightest bonds.

Yet I had thought you like the Euphrates,

    denying no water-drawer his fill.

I had never imagined that, in your eyes,

I ranked among the shabby, insignificant folk.

    فجدت بكد من المنع وافي

    I asked for two qafiz-measures of wheat;

you lavished the full hardship of refusal.

    You followed your refusal by shutting me out;

Enough—may you be guided! Refusal suffices.

I asked you for grain for kashk in the pots,

in fond familiarity with those charming ways.

You stalled me, then evaded me,

and muddied all that was clear in our affection.

As though I had asked you for the kernel of hearts,

that which lies behind the heart's membrane.

Did you fear famine, O Hashimite,

distrusting the security of the Ilaf covenant,

though God, in His revelation, proclaimed

it to Quraysh with the strongest proclamation?

Or did reproving women beset your ear

with blame about that, on every side?

Peace be upon you! Were it not for brotherhood,

rhymes upon rhymes would yet have come to you.

It truly grieved me that you should have fled

before the encounter, before the sparring.

Had it been someone else who then changed,

he would have met my reproaches like catapult stones.

Can this truth be denied—that I am a man

who sets anyone crooked straight with the shaft-straightener?

I seem to see you saying, 'He has come

to take our wheat with idle tales!'

Our patrons, be fair, be fair!

Your injustice is plain, not hidden.

    ر يأكلها ناعل بعد حافي

    You freely surrendered your estate to ruin;

a shod man devours it after a barefoot one.

It has withheld its bounty from your clients,

yet for distant strangers it is a choice estate.

Yet I am surely unjust in blaming you,

though there is aloofness in you and from you.

For I see that people have been driven mad,

and now their attire is all reversed:

their feet are in their caps,

in madness, and their heads in their boots.

Sons of Hashim, where, beyond your guest's reach,

is your crumbled tharid in the platters?

Has the water of your channels sunk away,

or is your wheat seed in Khusaf?

Did not your Hashim build your glory,

and your Abd Manaf, upon the heights?

    ففيه لعمري من الداء شافي

    Rely on your judgment concerning my need;

in it, by my life, lies a cure for the malady.

Do not lose heart about my return if you erase

an evil deed with a gracious acknowledgment.

    فليس لما بيننا من تلافي

    And do not plead excuses without a valid excuse;

what lies between us is beyond repair

until the veil of gray hair is restored

    to me, pitch-black as a raven's wing.
