But for you, there would have been no lack of blood spilled

in vain, from the fallen dead and the wounded.

Then those at work would surely have been barred from life-giving rain

by obstacles backed by sovereign power and fraught with harm.

But you forbade the sword its onslaughts

through your blessing, and it recoiled like an exhausted man.

    وقد يهتدي أعمى بنور بصير

    And you replaced humankind's blind stumbling with guidance;

indeed, a blind man may be guided by the light of one who sees.

Nor was setting right the affairs that had grown crooked,

and that you cured of their sickness, an easy task.

But whoever God befriends is granted ease:

every hardship yields to him with the least effort.

Nor have you been demeaned; yet you are the man ever

ready, now for a caravan, now for a battle-host.

So you march out among the fighters, a matchless defender,

and at times stay behind, a matchless keeper of the caravan.

    وتبدو فلا تنفك نُصب مشير

    You are absent, yet never cease to occupy those who speak of you;

and when you appear, you are always the one people point out.

Your enemy brightens at your mention, although

he harbors deep within a fiercely blazing fire.

All the envious were asked about you,

and said, without a date-stone speck's weight of partiality:

“Refined in character, exalted in aspiration,

polished in judgment, his resolve a tightly twisted cord.”

So marvel at excellence so clear that it was discerned

by people as dull-witted as asses.

And marvel at excellence so clear that before it bowed

roaring beasts from among the enemies.

Even every spiteful foe came to extol it

in words, then follow his words with a groan.

    Some men, through their injustice, made time drag for me;

and how many a day through you has seemed short to me!

If I had a claim that you wished to discharge,

you would be found to have exceeded it by far.

But what you bestow is bounty you have granted,

and forsaking bounty is unworthy of you.

If you are a sun whose light is in its nature,

how could we find you not shining?

And if you are a cloud too full to hold its water,

how could we find you not pouring rain?

God insists that you shine for the bewildered

and give rain to the rain-seeker, with the resolve of the All-Powerful.

I gave thanks, asking for no increase, yet you gave me more:

a copious flow of kindness after a copious flow.

You lavished a torrent after drops; and life-giving rain

has rushing torrents in the wake of drops.

You rained when I had withered, until you drenched me,

so my bough is supple along its length, unbroken.

    فيا حُسنَه حَمْلاً خلال شكير

    It bears the fruits of gratitude among its fresh shoots;

how lovely its load of fruit amid those shoots!

They said, “Prolong his praise.” I said, “You need only

my well-rope, for the well is not deep.”

Indeed, I have sometimes been brief in praising a noble man,

yet won a brimming bucketful of his bounty.

I cannot do without what you possess, even if

the keys to all I had been granted weighed a camel's load.

    يُجير بك الأحرارَ خيرُ مُجير

    So live in God's protection, the best of neighbors;

the best Protector grants free men refuge through you.

God's hand is a shield against time's vicissitudes,

guarding the precious stake that glory holds in you.

You have no fault except that you have never left

a generous man who raced you anything but breathless,

and that anyone whose companion you become for a day,

among all mankind, disparages every other companion.

I have given you this radiant poem, whose swift gait traverses

the pleasure-seeker's day and the night companion's night,

though in you I have extolled only one already extolled,

and though I have celebrated only a name already renowned.
