وجُرِّدْتَ للجُلَّى وكنتَ حُساماً
Your first effort made a second needless in every situation;
Drawn for the gravest crisis, you were a keen-edged sword.

Why, then, do you glance off my target in my hand,
Though I have not failed through weakness, nor am I dull?

كذوباً ولا استسقيتُ منك جهاما
Grant me your bounty! I saw in you no rainless lightning,
False in its promise, nor did I seek rain from you as from a barren cloud.

Leave aside mention of denying me, for you are not one
Who deems it forbidden to kill supplicants by denying them.

إذا أيقظ الملهوفُ مثلَكَ ناما
He who enlists your help in a matter sleeps; indeed,
When a man in distress rouses one like you, he sleeps.
