What made my poverty easier to bear
Was my long confinement under your humiliating treatment.
فالآنso now ماnot اسْتَجشأتُI found coarse منof مَطْعَمِيmy food
عنديto me وماand not استخشنتI found rough منof مَلبسيmy clothing
So now none of my food seems coarse
To me, nor any of my clothing rough.
جُزيتُمُmay you be rewarded عنfor طيبthe goodness of ماwhat أغتذيI feed on
خيراًwith good وعنand for نعمةthe softness of ماwhat أكتسيI wear
May you be rewarded for the goodness of what I eat,
With good, and for the softness of what I wear.
أعجِبْmarvel! بأنat the fact that رَوَيتُمُyou quenched غُلتيmy thirst
ومنand from سوىother than منهلِكمyour watering place أحْتسيI sip
How wondrous that you have quenched my thirst,
Though I sip from a watering place other than yours!

How many people have hoped for your bounty,
Whose prison is narrower than mine!

لاnot تُعْدِمونيyou deprive me of منsomeone بهin him أأْتسيI find consolation
And among the favors of your generosity is that you
Never leave me without someone in whom to find consolation.

Reviling you—and that alone—
Is what now fills my gathering.

فقريmy poverty وماand not أخطأتُI erred فيin مِقْيسيmy comparison
I measured against the oppression I endure from you
My poverty—and did not err in my comparison.

أليَنَgentler إرغاماًin humiliation علىupon مَعْطسيmy nose
So the touch of poverty, as I see it,
Pressed my nose into the dust more gently.
