بانdeparted الشبابyouth ونِعْمand how excellent الصاحبُthe companion الغادِيthe departing one
وكانand it was ماwhatever شئتَyou wished منof أنسcompanionship وإسعادِand joy
Youth has gone—and what a fine departing companion!
And it was all you could wish for in companionship and joy.
بانdeparted الشبابyouth حميداًpraiseworthy ماnever ذممتُI faulted لهits
عهداًa pledge ولاnor ذُمَّwas blamed ماwhat زودتُI was supplied with منof زادِprovisions
Youth departed, praiseworthy; I never found fault
With any pledge of its, nor was the provision I received ever blamed.
وكانand it was واللهوُand pleasure مقرونينcoupled together فيin قَرَنٍa tether
فانبتَّthen was severed حبلُهُماtheir cord منيfrom me لميعادِat an appointed time
It and pleasure were coupled in a single tether,
Then their cord was severed from me at an appointed time.
وقدand indeed تخايلتُI strutted proudly فيin سربالهits robe عُصُراًfor ages
أعودI revisit فيهin it منof اللذاتpleasures أعياديmy festivals
And for ages I had strutted proudly in its robe,
Revisiting in it my festivals of pleasure,
إذwhen للشبابyouth had حِبالاتٌsnares أصيدُI hunt بهاwith them
وغِرَّةٌand innocence تدَّرِيlures وحشيmy wild self لمصطاديfor my hunter
When youth had snares with which I hunted,
And an innocence that lured my wild self to my hunter.
أُصبيI captivate الفتاةthe maiden وتُصبينيand captivates me الفتاةُthe maiden بهthrough it
كلاboth الحبيبينthe two lovers منقادyielding لمنقادِto one who yields
I charmed the maiden, and through it the maiden charmed me—
Each lover yielding to one who yielded in return.
