أمورٌmatters وإنand even if عُدَّتthey are deemed صغاراًsmall عظائمُmomentous
Among the miseries of life, when it turns hostile,
And among the world's vexations, when it turns hostile,
are matters that, though counted small, are grave.
Are matters that, though deemed small, are momentous.
إذاwhen رُمتُI seek بالمِنقاشwith the tweezers نتفَplucking أشاهِبيmy gray hairs
أُتيحَare made available لهto it (the tweezers) منfrom دُونهنَّin place of them الأداهمُthe black hairs
When I try with tweezers to pluck my gray hairs,
When I seek with tweezers to pluck my gray hairs,
the jet-black hairs are presented to them instead.
The black hairs fall within their reach instead.
فأَنتفُso I pluck ماwhat أهوىI love بغيرwithout إرادتيmy will
وأَتْركُand I leave ماwhat أَقْلىI loathe وأنفيَand my nose راغمُrubbed in dust; humbled
So against my will I pluck out what I love,
So I pluck what I love against my will,
and leave what I loathe, my nose ground in dust.
And leave what I loathe, my nose rubbed in dust.

My tweezers dodge the stars of my gray hairs,
The stars at my temples elude my tweezers,
though to my eye they stand out, risen and gleaming.
Though to my eye they rise, plainly visible.
