Does one gaze ever end except in another gaze?
Does a glance ever end except in another glance?
Or is one longing ever fulfilled except in another longing?
Or does a desire end except in another desire?

فأينso where عنكaway from you مَميلa place to turn السمعhearing والبصرand sight
And in you is the finest thing to which souls aspire;
And in you is the best of what souls aspire to;
where, apart from you, is there any resting place for hearing and sight?
where, then, could hearing and sight turn away from you?

غادرتِهyou left it behind منamong نباتplants الأرضthe earth والشجرand trees
Can you find for me any fresh, enchanting beauty
Can you find me any youthful bloom, delightful and fair,
that you left among the earth’s plants and trees,
that you have left among the earth's plants and trees,

لأنbecause مطلبthe object sought ماwhat بيis within me داحضdefeating الغُدَرacts of treachery
so you could say, “Its radiant charm drew him away”?
so you might say, 'Its cheerfulness won him over'?
For the object of the longing within me gives the lie to faithlessness.
For the object of my longing defeats treachery.
ماnot فاتsurpassed حسنَكyour beauty لاneither شمسٌsun ولاnor قمرٌmoon
إلاexcept نباهةrenown ذكرname الشمسthe sun والقمرِand the moon
Neither sun nor moon has surpassed your beauty,
Neither sun nor moon has surpassed your beauty,
save in the renown of the names sun and moon.
except in the renown of the sun's and moon's names.

By God, whenever seeing you wearied my gaze, I brought it back—
By God, you never eluded my gaze for even the time it takes to return
only to meet you as though after a long absence.
without my meeting you as though after a long absence.
