أيلتمسُdo ... seek? الناسُthe people الغنىwealth فيصيبهمand it comes to them
وألتمسُwhile I seek القوتَsustenance الطفيفmeager فيلتويyet it proves elusive
Do people seek wealth and have it come to them,
People seek riches, and riches find them
while I seek meager sustenance, only for it to elude me?
While I seek modest sustenance, and it eludes me
ويمنعنيand bars me from وردَcoming to drink at الشرائعthe watering places أهلُهاtheir keepers
ويشرعand enters to drink غيريsomeone other than me فيinto السحابthe clouds فيرتويand drinks his fill
And the keepers deny me access to their watering places,
Those who own the gardens deny me their roses
while another enters the clouds and drinks his fill.
While others help themselves to the rainclouds and are sated
لَماsurely not خِلتُI thought هذاthis الجَوْرinjustice للدهرfor fate يستويwould be possible
وعينُكand your eye تصفوlooks kindly ليon me ورأيُكَand your judgment يستويis sound
I never thought fate capable of such injustice,
As long as injustice prevails in this world
while your eye looks kindly on me and your judgment is sound.
And your eyes are kind to me, and your opinion is kind
إلىto أينَwhere بيwith me إنْif خانَbetrayed حبلُكَyour rope قَبْضَتيmy grasp
وأيand which النوىthe far-off destination إنif كانwere ذلكthat أنتويI intend
Where would I go if your rope betrayed my grasp,
Where can I go if your rope slips my grip?
and which far-off destination would I aim for, if that were so?
What can I intend if this is what I intend?
