Do not disbelieve me, for my anguish is not absent
Do not deny me, for I have no solace without the lost one,
on the day of parting, nor is my patience to be found.
On the day we parted, and no patience with the present.
وليسand … is not عيشيmy life وإنeven though دامتendured غَضَارتُهُits ease

Nor is my life, though its ease endures,
My life, however long it lasts, is not life to me,
pleasing to me since my brother went far away.
Without my distant brother in Mahmud.
كناwe were قرينينtwo companions كالرُّوحيْنlike two souls فيin جسدٍa body

We were two companions, like two souls in one body,
We were two souls in one body,
among mankind, and like two branches on one stem;
Among people, and two branches in one tree,

two intimates, two close friends, whose union had not been assailed
Accustomed companions whom the vicissitudes of time
by time's vicissitudes with scattering and dispersal.
Did not divide or disperse.
فغالنيthen it robbed me الدهرtime فيهwith regard to him بالفراقthrough parting كماjust as

Then time robbed me of him through parting, just as
So fate has pained me with parting, as
it had robbed my eye of the taste of slumber through sleeplessness.
The taste of colocynth pains my eye with tears.
واللّهand God أسألI ask أنthat يُدنيHe bring near بقُدرتهby His power

And I ask God, by His power, to bring near
And I pray to God with his power
a visit from him to one burning with longing, sorely afflicted.
To bring me near to the distant shrine of Harran Ma'mud.
