Did you question the dwelling's traces, or did you not?

Effaced dwelling-sites, as though they had never been inhabited,

worn remnants, eroded by decay as wasting sickness erodes

my body at the parting of their departing dwellers.

Had they been able, when I wept for their obliteration,

they would have wept for my wasting with freely flowing tears.

And I once knew their courtyards filled with company,

in days when they knew me like a polisher's sword:

supple with youth, refusing no pleasure

that summoned my desire, nor submitting to my reproachers.

Whenever I wished, I set out in the morning, unrestrained,

and returned at evening, having caught a gazelle with her young.

Time's misery! Always a later turn

of its fortunes effaces the beauties of an earlier one.

And I am noble on both sides, of Persia's Chosroes,

and a son of proud kings, with no falsely claimed descent.

They raised my eminence, noble forebear after noble forebear,

until it rose to al-Simak the Unarmed,

where every challenger's reach falls short

below me, and the beholder's gaze grows weary.

An honor to him through you, son of the millstone-grinder,

is my targeting you, while your house lies in the lowest depths.

O son of fornication—an accepted testimony,

like testimony based on the revealed Book.

Indeed, the woman who bore you declares that she

conceived you from the seed of several studs.

With a huge clitoris—if she butted with its tip,

Thahlan, it would move the mountain without itself budging.

Foul-breathed—if she breathed upon solid rock,

her breath would split the backs of boulders.

Rank-smelling—if she moistened with her skin's sweat

a man's body, no stream could cleanse him of it.

With green saliva—if she spat it upon

rain-fertilised soft earth, it would not sprout.

Burning with lust, she stills the erections of a thousand strapping youths,

all lustful, yet her disease's thirst remains unquenched.

Do not rage against God; it is merely

the work of her studs thrusting with their cocks.

Had she spared you throughout your stay in her arse,

you would have been safe, but her disease gave no respite.

She deemed your destruction and loss less grievous

than losing two thrusts of an uncircumcised ass's cock.

So fasten the blame for your two eyes upon her head,

not upon God or the Prophet sent forth.

    فدعِ الهوادةَ في الحكومةِ واعدلِ

    Neither deserved your ingratitude for her crime;

so forgo leniency in judgment, and be just.

May your mother be watered with the pus of Hell,

not the downpour of a brightly flashing cloud.

Indeed she left this world, regretting no

    pleasure in drink or food,

except intercourse with slaves; for she

never forgot it, or the thoughts of it.

Death enveloped her, yet the thought within her heart

was of cocks, as though nothing else occupied her.

    فابذلْ لناكتها عجانَك وابذلِ

    She left you, and those she bore, to take her place;

so offer her fuckers your perineum—offer it!

Indeed, you have gifted them a woman acting like the one

whose praises as a generous, lavish giver spread abroad.

O fornicators of Bab al-Sham, all of you, rejoice

in your poet's daughter—the finest one to kiss.

She has taken his mother's place for you, and undertaken

your care, though she has not yet completed ten years.

O little Abu Yusuf—a call from one who scorns you,

who belittles you and refuses to address you from on high.

Take this: it drives sleep's enveloping veil

from those it targets, and makes a spacious home feel cramped.

And it makes pure water seem to you as though,

in your mouth, it were mixed with an infusion of colocynth.

I had indeed kept my verse away from you, out of pride

and fastidiousness, holding back my tongue's sharp edge.

    جاش الضميرُ بهن جيشَ المِرجلِ

    But headstrong, overpowering steeds of verse refused;

my mind seethed with them like a boiling cauldron.
