ولحيةٍand a beard لوif شاءwilled ذوthe Lord of المعارجِthe ways of ascent
ولحيةٍ لو شاء ذو المعارجِ
أغنىwould have enriched بهاwith it كواسدَthe idle ones among النواسجِthe women weavers
أغنى بها كواسدَ النواسجِ
And a beard—had the Lord of the Ways of Ascent willed,
He could have enriched the idle women weavers with it,
بنسجby weaving مِسْحينtwo haircloth rugs لخانfor the inn of الديْزجِal-Dayzaj
بنسج مِسْحين لخان الديْزجِ
وفرَّقand distributed الباقيthe remainder علىamong الكواسِجِthe scant-bearded men
وفرَّق الباقي على الكواسِجِ
By weaving two haircloth rugs for al-Dayzaj’s inn,
And distributed the rest among the scant-bearded men.
