الموتُdeath دونless grievous than تفَرُّقِthe parting of الأحبابِthe loved ones
وعذابُand the torment of نأيهمُtheir distance أشدُّthe harshest عذابِtorment
Death is less grievous than the parting of loved ones,
Death is better than parting with loved ones
and the torment of their distance is the harshest torment.
And the torment of their absence is harsher torment
لمnot تُبْلَbeen tried مذsince خُلقتْwere created نفوسُthe souls of ذويthose possessed of الهوىlove
يوماًon any day بمثلby the like of ترحُّلٍdeparture وذَهابِand going away
Never since their creation have lovers’ souls been tried
The souls of lovers have never
on any day by anything like departure and going away.
Known a day like this leave-taking and going
بانواthey departed بلُبِّكَwith your reason رائحينgoing away وخَلَّفواand they left behind
لكfor you دمعةًa tear موصولةَunceasing in التَّسكابِpouring forth
They departed, carrying off your reason as they went, and left
They came to your heart and left
you a tear whose flow is unbroken.
A tear for you, continuous in its flowing
فسقاهُمُso may it water them نوءُstar-associated rain السّماكal-Simāk بماin return for what سَقواthey watered
خدَّيكَyour two cheeks بالعبراتwith tears صوبَa downpour from سحابِclouds
So may al-Simāk’s rains water them—in return for their watering
So the Clouds of Vicissitudes gave them to drink
your cheeks with tears—with a downpour from the clouds.
What they had let flow, your cheek's teardrops
